Reading PDFs
What happens when you open a PDF
Books Listening reads the text inside your PDF and speaks it sentence by sentence, right in your browser.
Upload, then press play
Drag your PDF into the reader or choose it from your device. The text appears on screen and the voice starts reading from the first sentence, or from wherever you tap.
Follow the highlighted word
The word being spoken is highlighted and the page scrolls with it, so you can listen and read at once, or glance away and come back to the right spot.
Pick up where you left off
Add bookmarks, organize files into folders and set a sleep timer for listening at night. Slow the voice to 0.5× or speed it up to 2.0×, and adjust the pitch.
Works with more than PDFs
The same reader opens EPUB, DOCX, DOC, ODT, RTF, TXT and HTML files, so one tool covers your whole reading pile.
Look up words as you listen
Tap a word for a definition, or translate a sentence into one of 12 languages without leaving the page. Both are optional.
Easy on the eyes
Switch between Midnight, Forest and Ocean themes for long sessions and late-night reading.

FAQ
Common questions
Can I read a PDF out loud for free?
Yes. The first 200 sentences are free with no account and no credit card. After that, a single $19.99 payment unlocks unlimited reading.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
It reads the text inside the file. A PDF that is only a picture of a page, such as a scan with no selectable text, has no text to read aloud. If you can select and copy words in your PDF, it will work.
Is my PDF uploaded to your servers?
No. Your documents are processed in your browser and are not sent to us. Optional features such as the dictionary and translation use outside services only when you use them. See our privacy policy.
Can I use it on my phone?
It runs in your browser, so you can open the reading room on any device with a modern browser.
